Mission
The purpose of the BU1LT for Success Scholarship was designed to promote equity and opportunity by offsetting the burden of textbook costs for a promising first-year BIPOC law student of color. Entering law school can be hard, and funding law school can be harder. Every student deserves the comfort and dignity that comes with simply being prepared. We’re here to break down obstacles for BIPOC law students one textbook at a time.
Award
Scholars will receive a determined amount to assist with the costs of their textbooks and course materials that is not already covered by other financial aid contribution.
Eligibility
- Applicant must be enrolled in a Chicagoland law school (Depaul, Loyola, UofC, UIC John Marshall, Kent, Northwestern).
- Applicants must be an incoming 1L (2L/3L/transfer students are ineligible).
- Applicant must identify as a minority (black or otherwise).
Essay Prompts 2021-2022
Select one (1) of the following essay prompts:
- Was Biden really a better candidate than Trump? Discuss your views on the climate of our current government. Compare and contrast their political campaigns and promises with the realities of their presidency.
- Should equal opportunity employers have the authority and discretion to fire employees they find or assume to be racist? Look to the story of Amy Cooper in New York for inspiration.
- Describe what being a BIPOC lawyer means to you
- Is abortion an individual right that needs federal protection, or should it be governed by local government?
*Applicants may include a financial hardship addendum with their application materials if they are experiencing financial hardship for consideration.
